Saintsmourn

"Bless me father, for I have sinned," the words tumbled past his lips, ingrained in the well worn pathways of his memory from the years he'd spent in catechism and as an altar boy. Not that Liam was devout anymore -- how could he be, given what he'd become, given what he did and continued to do. The confessional booth was small and dark, light filtering in only dimly through the door and its screen that kept him hidden from the sanctuary beyond and from the priest he assumed would be on the other side.

"It has been... a very long time since my last confession."

What was he doing here? This was ridiculous. He couldn't possibly expect forgiveness and absolution. There had to be true repentance for that, real contrition, and Liam knew he couldn't manage either. He hated what he did, despised every moment of it, but he wouldn't stop. He couldn't stop. The price for disobeying was far too severe, and he would not be the one to pay it. The price for his disobedience and his failure would be paid by his brother, and he couldn't live with that.

So William had made his choice, made it again and again, putting that one life ahead of so many others. And oh he was good at what he did, talented at ruining people, in shattering whatever it was in a human being that kept their souls in place, until they were ready to throw it away. His watcher commended him for it, in a sick and sadistic sort of amusement.

Today's lost soul had been... fuck. It had been hard. She was young, barely nineteen, and her road had already been a hard one. He'd played the game with her for the past few weeks, insinuating darkness and doubt into the cracks of that already-battered soul. Today. Today she'd shattered, and there would be no recovering from it. Another soul for the demon who owned him.

He could feel the panic rising up in his chest, cold and hard and threatening to freeze his lungs so he couldn't draw in enough breath. In the dimness and silence of the confessional, all the carefully constructed walls and facades trembled and fell away. Gone were the easy smiles and quite literal devil-may-care attitude, all the charisma and charm that he relied on in his cursed excuse for a job. It was him and his breathing and the silence and the faceless priest in the chamber beside him. Liam wondered if he could hear the panic in his breathing.

"I... sorry. This was a mistake. I should go. I'm sorry, Father, for wasting your time."

There was a few moments where what Gregory spoke had the luxury of sinking in; the moment those hard diamond words registered, his folded hands clasped into a very discernable fist while his own gray eyes adopted the hard rocky exterior of a lighthouse guarded coast. The fingers manipulated the string within him and the pull was felt but he gritted his teeth against it, and he almost felt like snarling.

But he did not, because he was wise enough to realize that this was a battlefield on which Liam was a non-combatant, anything he said that was scathing or biting would have adverse effects that Liam did not deserve.

Yeah, he could see that this man was a tool-- it oozed from him and it did not take much to attach this visage to the voice he'd heard over the phone not so long ago. "You have some way of treating your favored pets." he said this calmly before he took a sip of his drink, though it served nothing except to chase away the bitter taste in his mouth. "You break your toys, you lose them."

Ah. Was there some fight in this human after all? Interesting. It made Gregory want to poke and prod at him, made him want to see what the priest looked like when all that goodness and purity was stripped away from him in slow, painful strips, a lingering spiritual flaying. Could be fun. For now though he continued the slow, winding motion of his finger, eyes fixed on Riley's face as he waited to see what the priest would say.

Gregory laughed at the accusation. "I treat him exactly as he deserves to be treated, because he really is one of my more talented little playthings. It's a genuine pleasure to watch him work. Of course, it's a pleasure watching him do other things too. But you know that much, don't you?" Here he dragged his hand back, and that pull would increase until it gave a soft little snap and something of Riley broke away. The demon lifted his finger and wrapped his lips around it, like he was licking away some stolen morsel of frosting. Delicious. Spicier than expected.

"Playthings are meant to be broken. It's their purpose. They're temporary amusements, temporarily useful tools. And my darling Liam has some use in him still." A tilt of his head as he considered. "Maybe I'll set him on your soul for his last hurrah, when he gets there. I think ruining the bright, pure thing he has delusions of loving might finally snuff out those last stubborn bits of light in him."

He felt a strange sort of piercing run through him, it was not pain but like an almost electric jolt that went through him, as if one of his synapses fired in an explosion and then went out. It left him a little bit dazed, though his eyes watched the other man warily, every movement was now a newly realized affront to him. "It really is funny, but if you were so certain of your hold on him.. you would not be here right now."

He was not going to tell this man about the fact that both him and Liam had not spoken to each other, that it had been a non-issue.

"Therefore all I see is a demon who is scared of losing his favorite thing, after all I am merely a paltry human, yes? I am a threat to you and every word that comes out of your mouth only proves that." he murmured this quietly, the sea fog in his eyes did not back down from Gregory's words nor his assessing and daring visage.

"Maybe I just don't like other people touching my things." Gregory was the one to snarl here, a sure sign that Riley had gotten under his false skin. In the next moment he straightened up where he sat, and leaned back in his chair, once more the picture of arrogant assurance. He reached for his coffee to sip thoughtfully, humming his approval at the taste of chocolate on his lips. "You realize I could end your life, such as it is, without so much as wrinkling my trousers, yes?" It was a threat yes, but strangely empty somehow. If he'd meant to kill Riley, he'd have done it surely. "It's still an option, but I'm hoping we can settle this as civilized men. It's why I wanted to talk to you, to keep this from getting messy. But."

"Make no mistake, Father, he is mine, to do with as I please. And now that I've made that clear to you, I'll see that Liam is properly reminded as well."

A brief tilt of his head. "It has been a pleasure meeting you. Enjoy your drink."

There was a flash to Riley's eyes, as if he was going to do something that he was sorely going to regret. For a moment the demon could be assured that he had gotten underneath his skin-- a tit for tat all told. Riley's fingers curled into the handle of the mug, the knuckles nearly turning white as rage burned and seethed through him. It was a righteous white anger, the sort reserved for evil-- for the vanquishing of it.

"I would like to see..."

At that point in time, that person not Declan was sliding past the table with a tray laden with beverages suited for the cold bitter autumnal air. There was a jolt, the kick of a chair and then the tray came hurtling down, nearly a slow motion freefall hot spiced apple laden with copious amounts of frothy whipped cream (not topping, that would not have stood in Declan's kitchen, nothing but the real thing-- or whatever).

A face framed by reddish curls looked down with almost feigned surprise. "Oops, I did it again."

At that moment, the stereo kicked into gear as it did a near 180 from Lord Huron, to Britney Spear's iconic track of the same name where it would repeat for as long as was needed. "Perhaps you should be careful where you are throwing around those soul threads, it appears I tripped on it?' Golden eyes stared at Gregory, nearly as unnerving as that of a cat, those slits narrowing to fine points. "Really it's encouraged that you do not partake of outside food or drink inside our establishment." it wasn't his but okay.

"Oh right, no favorites." this creature reminded themself as they reached over, picked up a glass of unsweetened raspberry tea just being brought to lips by a patron. "Sorry, not borrowing-- definitely stealing." and then leaving the customer sputtering there as they in one fell movement overturned it over Riley's head.

"Don't take that personally." The server quipped.

Oh? Gregory was entirely ready to see what the priest thought he was going to do. It was adorable. And then chaos suddenly rained down. Gregory sputtered as he found himself showered in something hot and apple-y.

Declan, behind the counter, sighed the heaviest sigh any creature had ever sighed in the history of sighs. "Mads... leave my playlist alone. We have talked about this."

Gregory was on his feet in the next moment, scowling as the redhead preened at him. "Faerie trash. None of this concerns you!" He snarled, voice losing the polished and gregarious tone all at once. Fingers tensed and curled, and for a moment something dark gathered around the demon, and now he was the one about to do something foolish.

Declan's voice rang out once more, a sudden silence sweeping the room while everyone present froze in place save for those involved in this little dust up. The fae man seemed taller suddenly, features losing some of the softer parts of their usual veneer of humanity, the faint outline of an antlered crown and mantle appearing. "Think carefully. Remember whose domain you are in, hellspawn. I think perhaps you have overstayed your welcome here."

The shadows at Gregory's fingers flickered before slowly folding in on themselves. "Very well. My business is done here anyway." Another glance at Riley. "I'll give my pet your regards."

Riley was trying to figure out what was happening here, he was cold and wet-- brimming with ice cubes and raspberry iced tea which absolutely drenched his hair; tentatively, he also made a move to dislodge the ice cubes from between his sweater and undershirt. Oh look, a piece of ice in his priests collar-- that too was fished out and then plopped in the cup of Gregory's discarded coffee.

It wasn't like he was going to use it again.

The priest could not fake a smile even if his life depended on it, rather he just glared in that angry cat sort of way which was absolutely out of character for him, his features normally so placid and kind.

"Never any fun, you are allergic I swear to god." 'Mads' stated as they stuck one hand in their coat while the other turned it right back to the playlist that made this whole thing feel like a cottagecore nightmare to them. Then he ran his hand over his sharp jawline, "Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out..." might want to go fast there Gregory, this Fae was feeling spicy and was bored.

A dangerous combination.

Riley sat there and watched Gregory leave. "I did not mean to make a scene." he said this quietly.

"The mop is in the utility closet, Maduin," Ducky informed his idiot brother pointedly. Making messes meant that there were messes to be cleaned up. "And stop antagonizing demons, please. That is how wars start, and I will not reign over a battlefield if I can do anything to avoid it."

Don't make him get the bad Madiun spray bottle. He'd do it. It was always nearby.

Gregory turned to glower at Maduin like he truly wished to set the fae on fire then and there, but instead simply held a hand out to catch the door before turning with as much of his dignity as he had left (not as much as he had come in with).

Declan swept out from behind the counter, placing a new glass of iced tea into the affronted (and still frozen) customer's hand. From there, he stepped to where Riley stood, long, slender fingers brushing at the priest's shoulder as if he could simply flick away the iced tea. ...which somehow he managed to do, as if it were nothing more than just dust. He clucked his tongue softly. "You did nothing of the sort, Father. My brother on the other hand, made quite an elaborate one. Admittedly I do believe the scoundrel had it coming. But... we shall see if it winds up being an entire inter-planar incident." A pointed look at Maduin. Stop making diplomatic bombs for fun. Bad kitty.

Then his gaze softened as he smiled at Riley. "You are always welcome in my shop. Though I would advise that perhaps you keep less nefarious company going forward." He fluffed at the ends of blond hair, setting that to right too. "Are you all right?"

Maduin sniffed rather indignantly, a flick of their fingertip because they had been so looking forward to slamming the door on the demon's pompous arse; it was not that Maduin had any particular noble cause here or there for what was done, or maybe they did. Predictable was ne'er in the vocabulary, missing alongside such golden words as moderation, tact, and principles.

"A war would be a damn sight better than whatever this is."

There is a stalking toward the utility closet, boots shuffling and the hem of their coat as they disappeared into the backroom, where mysteriously-- all was silent.

"I am alright, I am just.." Riley said and then blinked at the way that Ducky managed to take care of the mess that had been made of him, almost as if by magic. A shocked expression on his face and then he made a nearly intuitive connection. "This is... Tolkien stuff, is it not?" Only 25 percent right on a guess but far closer than most.

"He has Liam entangled in his net and I.. I guess I got angry? I did not mean to follow him, nor did I mean to incite his anger, but well." Riley spread his hands on the table and took a deep breath. "This is not what I was expecting, all of this but it is easier to believe than it would've been maybe a month ago?"

"No wars, Mads. They are terrible for business, and worse they would get in the way of my wedding this Beltane." And that was the cardinal sin. Wars were not allowed to keep him from his courtship and wooing and eventual marriage of his intended. No thank you.

He shook his head at the grown man stomping off in a tantrum -- and would deny six ways to Sunday that there was any fondness in it, of course, even if there clearly was -- before his attention returned once more to Riley. He settled a hand against the poor man's cheek, patting gently. "Oh dear boy. Tolkien wishes. He had a glimpse or two and made quite the tale of it all. But it is Fae stuff. I believe you have had your eyes opened to a number of things most humans are deliberately made to look past."

Ducky stepped back and glanced around at the still frozen scene, considering before beginning a soft humming sound, one that would cloud the memories of his patrons for the past few moments. Not quite a memory wipe so much as a memory smudge. Sometimes a gap was an obvious thing, but a blur? Easier to look past.

"Demons are all too easy to rile, more so if there is someone caught in a tug of war betwixt the two of you. Is that the case? Liam... mm. I know him, I believe. Latte with a double shot of espresso, at all hours. The lost soul. His eyes are as full of sorrow as my betrothed's... though his sadness is sharper, more prone to cutting." His Noah's was a melancholy, soft and sweet like a funeral dirge, and Declan was working on replacing that sadness with joy, piece by piece, day by day.

There was a call from the backroom, it was loud and obnoxiously theatrical. "Oh, you mean the wedding that your intended DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT???" and then all was quiet, and would remain quiet until Declan decided to check on his erstwhile sibling and found that they had escaped through a portal in the utility closet, likely to harass some unsuspecting people in the Temu-version Narnia.

Riley knew of the man that Ducky spoke of, the very quiet English Professor who was grumpy until he'd had his first cup of coffee. He was known as his classes being much easier the later it was in the day, he recalled one of the students said that his 10AM class on Elizabethan Literature was brutal.

"The thing is that I do not wish to get him in the middle of anything." Riley said this about Liam, because he knew the other guy did not deserve it-- he had been dealt a very hard hand and Riley thought that if there was anything the other man should have, it was freedom above all else.

"Do you happen to know.. I mean since you are otherworldly, how one is able to get out of a deal with a demon?"

"HE HAS EATEN THE MUFFINS, MADUIN," Ducky shouted back, for the moment every bit the annoyed eldest brother and not the benevolent Fae monarch. Maduin brought out the best in him, clearly. Shut up, jerkface. Declan fully realized that no mop was forthcoming and started to see about wisping away the worst of the mess.

He sobered at Riley's question, humming softly.

"Demons are somewhat notorious in their well-crafted contracts..." Declan lamented quietly before allowing a bit of a smug smile. "But so are the Fae, so you are asking the right person. The wording is important. I would have to know the exact deal that was struck. But beyond that, well, the surest way to unravel a deal would be to kill the demon. Beyond that, undoing the boon given could perhaps negate it as well, though that would depend."

There was not a world that existed where Riley even knew what that meant and that was largely due to his theology studies which did not focus on fae customs. But that was fine, he did understand that it was also a brother thing, and to that? He could definitely relate to that on so many levels.

"I do not know the exact wording unfortunately, and I would imagine that such a contract would be carefully guarded by the keeper of said contract, as for the boon well undoing it is perhaps not feasible as it involves human life." the Priest was reluctant to give any more details than that; though he did take a sip of his dirty chai-- tentatively because there had been a inner-tea collision

Well that was magic, all he could taste was dirty chai.

"Liam and I have mutually decided not to see each other anymore so perhaps it is a moot point, and I have not the first clue on how to kill a demon aside to airdrop a few pounds of holy water onto him, or maybe shove a cruxifix up his vile ass." and that last part came with a bit of uncharacteristic vehmenance.

Man he and Riley had so much common ground. They could start their own support group. Declan would happily host it right here in his cafe. He spent another moment fussing at Riley's hair to make sure he'd magic'd away all the iced tea. It wouldn't do to have the priest leaving sticky.

"Well, it may not exist in writing. Words are binding when they are spoken the correct way. And this demon is not the only party to this deal. Perhaps Liam could shed some light on the intricacies of it?" It took two to tango, and two to make a deal.

Ducky invited himself to a seat in the seat that Gregory had abandoned, sitting back and crossing one absurdly long leg over the other.

He allowed a smile at the thought of Riley beating Gregory into oblivion with the various tools of the church. Delightful. But oh that was an interesting tidbit of information. "I see. So then, there is nothing between the two of you? If that is the case, then perhaps it is best not to inquire further. Demons are dangerous, and Liam is walking a path that will leave him more hellspawn than human before long, and once that balance tips, it is difficult to tip back."

There was an otherworldly sort of knowing about the other man, or perhaps it was just that right now Riley's eyes had been opened where they were once not so much. It meant that he was looking at Declan in a completely new light and even then, one that sparkled like a prism underneath sunlight.

He started to open his mouth, to say that there was nothing.

But it did not feel like nothing.

Therefore he shut it, to reformulate his thoughts. "There is.. something, but it is not advised, he is keeping me at a distance for my own good-- and I have a vow to think of.. but." and then he worried his lower lip with his teeth in a very definite sign of inner turmoil. "That does not mean that, vow or not.. I want him to suffer. I do not think that.. feelings run like that."

"Advised..." Ducky echoed before shaking his head, offering what he hoped was a gentle smile. "Humans are so peculiar in the things they choose to deny himself. I cannot imagine denying my heart for any reason. Well, other than my beloved not returning those feelings."

But his betrothed had kept coming back for more baked goods, so clearly that wasn't even an issue to consider. They were very much meant to be in love. It was about this moment that Declan realized he probably ought to stop fucking with time, and the rest of the cafe came back to life around them.

As if nothing had changed, Declan continued. "But you are right, Father. Feelings do not run like that. Still, you should be sure here -- whatever you choose. If you choose to act, you will set yourself in an infernal contest and not one that will be won easily. If you choose not to act, then your vows will be kept but other things will be lost, yes?"

Somewhere Declan's love interest looked up from the book he was reading and got the very sudden and absolute craving for banana-nut muffins.

Also? His ear itched a little bit.

Although Riley in the minute debated what Declan said, he was not an idiot and he saw clearly the crossroad looming, and it was one that he had to pick a path to go down-- and after a certain point there was no going back.

"You are right, I know you are right and it is something that merits thought, quick thought because I have a feeling that he will attempt to quicken the route to Liam's ruin." He put his head in his hands. "There is also the fact that Liam does not want to ruin me.. he does not want to tug me down to what he considers his level." A groan expelled with his breath.

"I can act, I can act because I care about him and I do not think that will change, I can act because it is the right thing to do.. because I want to act."

It had never been a question of him not wanting that.

Banana nut muffins were very suddenly on Declan's mind too. A batch must be made, would be made.

But first he had a mortal priest to counsel, one who was just starting to realize that there were more things in heaven and earth than were dreamt of in his philosophies. It was always a bit jarring when humans had their first glimpses beyond the thin veil of mundane life, and Ducky was sympathetic to this fact.

A brief nod. "Demons are not known for their patience at the best of times." So he was certainly right about that. Declan frowned briefly at the consideration of Riley being ruined. Well, quite possible, he expected, and something that Liam might be justified in worry about, but then he wondered if Liam had considered that he might instead be saved? He allowed himself a smile as Riley seemed to come to a decision. Look at him. He'd be a paladin in another time and place, sure and valiant and true. He rather fancied he could see it looking at him even now.

"Then act, my dear brave child." Declan reached out to pick up the rosary that Gregory had dropped. It was already a holy thing, and as he lifted it, a soft glow faint and subtle twined itself around the beads like a vine, adding just a little bit of Fae magic to it as well. Couldn't hurt. He pressed it into Riley's hand. "And I will add the blessing of my Court and my kin to the blessings you already carry with you."

With a very tentative hand, Riley reached for the chain that was offered to him-- and he took it. There was a sparkle to it, and perhaps it was true that he was beginning to see that there was more to the world than God and Demons, that there were other things-- which perhaps would push the narrative that maybe nothing was either black or white.

It was a quiver of hope that he felt within the palm of his hand even as he moved to place it around his neck once again, and then he tucked it between his sweater and his priest shirt where it would lay concealed except for the chain which glittered with motes of magic.

"Thank you, I.. I appreciate all this of what you've done for me; you did not need to but you did. And also say thank you to your.. sibling?" he said this carefully. He also knew that the chaos likely had upset the demon, which he could not trivialize at all. "I have a lot to do.. and I figure perhaps I can plot my next course of action tonight, see where that takes us." it would mean in his room researching on his laptop.. tomorrow he would act with whatever he found that could aid in his goal.

Declan smiled a playful little grin with a shake of his head, as he patted at Riley's shoulder lightly. "You are a regular, you are well-mannered, and you tip well." The Fae were fickle things, but they appreciated good manners and kind gestures. "Yet, more than that you remind me of a time very long ago when humanity was more prone to believing in fairy tales, and brave knights rode out to fight for liege lord and love. Perhaps I am a creature of nostalgia."

He absolutely was. Sitting back, Ducky shook his head a bit more vehemently at the mention of his sibling. "I will do nothing of the sort. Maduin deserves no thanks. They deserve the naughty-kitty-spray-bottle directly to their misbehaving face, but that is constantly and consistently the case, and in this instance, I suppose the chaos served a good purpose." A fond smile despite himself. Maduin was a menace and a headache, but Ducky, begrudgingly, loved his idiot younger sibling.

"You are perhaps right, two wrongs do not make a right.. and perhaps they should not be 'encouraged' but I am grateful in my own way and I will send that into the world-- and if it hits them in the face? Well it does." he did a little shrug that was self-effacing. Though he had noted that Gregory had not bothered to tip, which honestly Riley knew was the bane of the rich, they only would tip well if it involved their souls getting into heaven.

Which perhaps was the main thing that was wrong with religion.

But as it stood, Riley had discreetly tucked five dollars in the tip jar, because he understood that people were trying to get by in this world. "Well, we are all put here for a reason to sort of work together." this was a statement of fact, not even a question. "You've given me a lot of wisdom and I will take it to heart but I should go.. I have to go to vespers, and then from there.. to plot my next move." a tip of his head in respect.

He would have to one day research Fae customs to see if there was anything he could do to ah, well express gratitude in a fae-honouring way.

There had been research to do and Riley had stationed himself after Vespers at his cramped little desk in a dorm room that was the same as all the other rooms; the only difference was that Riley had attempted to make it like an apartment for one with all of those accommodations therein. But at the knock, he got up and went to the door.

And when he opened he saw Liam standing there.

He'd expected it to be a student quite honestly, and he furrowed his brows as he watched Liam with a concerned look. "Liam.. you are? Is everything..." but whatever he was about to say died on his lips as he saw the teeth mark and bruises on his neck.

He should've known. A sick downward twist in his stomach as he saw the way that Gregory had taken out his anger, something that was his fault. "Oh... I.. come in." he opened the door and then as he did so he looked out to make sure that there was no one in the hallways.

There wasn't, thankfully.

"I made a mistake.. I left something of mine over there." he said this quietly, and once that Liam calmed down a little bit. The defeated look in the other man's eyes as he pulled out the rosary from just underneath his sweater. "He came to return this to me." this was said quietly and then he shrugged a little bit. "He was exceptionally rude and I might have angered him a little bit and I realize that is another mistake because he hurt you too."

He went to the couch to sit down on it, leading Liam to sit on the wing chair. "Would you like some tea, to calm? I have a blend of chamomile that was made by Ducky, I am sure that it may help relax you a little bit.. but there is also Ibuprofen which I also have a supply of for more physical pains." he wanted to reassure him that he was okay, that he would be okay.

And also figure out how to broach that which he was doing, that he was figuring out a way to attack Liam head-on.
