Nicholas Kirkland (Nicky to those who he considered friends) was at this moment finishing up the last of his reading for his college classes. In the little dorm-room that himself and Patrick shared, it was a muddle of books and random objects that they'd collected. Not only that but also bits and bobs of their friendship tied into neat little nostalgic notes.

The last rays of the sun was streaming in through the window and he was poised, feet crossed on desk and balancing barely on the back two legs-- precarious yes, and honestly he knew that he should not really be doing this. Coordination be damned, he'd never worried about it before despite the bumps and bruises he regularly got because he was perennially distracted.

It was almost time for Patrick to come home from his late evening classes and then they'd start their foraging for dinner.

After that, well the evening was still young and there was trouble to be had. All of which he looked forward to, after all Patrick had for as long as he remembered, been his favorite partner in crime.. they had grown up together and they had a special bond.

As close as brothers, except not quite-- and honestly? Nicholas was glad for that.

'Gladly.' The thought flickered through his mind but didn't quite make it to being voiced, thankfully. He might have had the wind knocked out of him, but his brain at least seemed to be firmly in place. Look, he'd had more than one dream about being under Nicky. Or on top of Nicky. Or several other configurations of varying degrees of creativity.

So he took a moment before flopping onto his back as well. "You're proof chivalry isn't dead," Trick informed him at the offer of a hand up and the hypothetical offer of food. He stared up at the sky with a sigh. "This totally tanked any cool points I had left, didn't it?"

He reached over blindly to pat at Nicky's shoulder. "All good. I'm glad I could cushion your fall."

"Pssssh." Nicky said as he grasped for Trick's hand and and gave it a pat, his blue eyes sparkling. "I am the last person who should be schooling anyone about cool points-- Tish has been calling me a loser nerd for the last 20 something years of my life." a snort, a shared smile before he found his way finally to a standing position and then he offered a hand up.

"Also, you are the coolest person I know so perish that thought right there. In fact you are not allowed to think that of my best friend, and I will noodle arm at you if you do say to the contrary."

That was absolutely a threat.

"Well, she's half right. You're a huge nerd." Trick said with plain affection. "But that's one of the things I like best about you." Nerdy Nicky, especially when he was in his element, excitedly explaining some supernatural nuance or another, was sexy as all hell.

He took the offered hand up, standing, suddenly quite close to the other man, right up in his personal space. His breath caught and he fought a blush as he took a necessary step back. "Oh god no, not the noodles. Have mercy."

Another laugh and he snagged his takeout container from where it had been thankfully left atop the wall.

"Oh, she's full right-- I just choose to argue with her most of the time." he jibbed his sibling but it was nowhere near the levels of animosity that hung in the air between Liam and Trick, to which point Nicholas stayed well out of. It was not something he usually wanted to broach when it came right down to it, that was between them.

Then suddenly he was close, so very close to Trick-- so close that he could nearly taste that breath.

It was intoxicating and it took every single drop of willpower not to do anything ill-advised, which of course allowed Trick to take that step backward. Ah yes that was good.. even as he ached for the proximity. He had it down so bad for Trick, and the other guy did not even know-- he hoped that it stayed that way.

Now that he knew that Trick liked guys (he'd suspected) he knew that he was not really a guy, he was the best friend. "Shove some food in your mouthhole, jerkweed." Nicky said with a teasing lilt to his voice, to bring it to their usual banter.

Trick and Liam's relationship was, well, complicated. Right until Liam had turned eighteen, they'd been extremely close. Trick had looked up to him, and honestly Liam had been the perfect big brother. The something had changed, and Patrick still didn't understand what had caused it. There had to be some reason for it, but Liam wasn't forthcoming.

But he wasn't thinking about Liam right now. No, Trick was thinking about Nicky and how attractive he was when he was calling him names. Nicky was not really a guy, it was true. Nicky was the guy, which was something that Patrick could never let him know.

He laughed and rolled his eyes as the usual pattern of teasing and banter picked up. "Bite me, harlot."

He did open up his dinner though, fueling up before they dove into their investigation.

Did he say 'don't threaten me with a good time outloud'?

No, of course not--

But did he think it? Absolutely, yes.

"I am only a harlot because I am a readhead, and historically it is always the redheads who are the harlots." he said this with someone who consumed historical media like it was candy and he was a low on blood sugar; it was because history was where all the stories were-- and stories led to ghosts.

He ate with a certain gusto that showed that food had absolutely nowhere to go, like-- he was going to remain skinny and lithe it was true, nary those fries would not even see his ass (more's the shame really, he did not consider himself particularly blessed on the ass department, but then he did not know that his ass was nice.. gods knew he did not stand in front of the mirror checking out his assests.

"I can call you many things, but a revisionist historian is not one of them."

Patrick just beamed at Nicky as the nerd did his nerding. It was so fucking charming, he would listen to his roommate go on about history and his other interests for hours on end if he were allowed. Nicky's face lit up in the most endearingly adorable way. It was a privilege to be in his presence.

Also, for the record, Trick was very aware of his best friend's ass and how excellent it was.

He swallowed a mouthful of his own dinner before jabbing his plastic fork in Nicky's direction. "Well, thank god for that. ...what things can you call me exactly?"

"Let's see.." he started to enumerate on his fingers because he was benevolent like that. "Pain in my ass is my favorite one, but then there is jerkweed.. dickwad.. I like to pepper a slut muffin here and there, as muffins is one of my favorite things." and then he took a bite of his colesaw, chewing thoughtfully.

"Rounding out the smorgasbord of names would be prick, which is short, sweet and to the point." a waggle of his brows. Get it, 'point'?

"Wow you really had those ready to go, huh?" Patrick said, laughter woven through each syllable. "Prick is basically just shortening my name so yeah, well done."

He did, however, shove at Nicky's shoulder for the brow waggling and the pun because this dork. Why did Trick find that so sexy? What did that say about him? Except that he was totally a slut muffin apparently. Fuck him and his life.

"All right, you frosted ho-nut with sprinkles, let's get spooky already."

That was a good one, and Nicky grinned in that disarming way of his. He fastened the lid over the container and would dump it in the nearest trash can when he found one, there were a few down the street for when they made their escape, but he generally attempted to respect the old abandoned houses. Which meant leaving things roughly how they were when they got there.

He turned and started to trudge through the growth, careful to avoid any patch of vegetation that looked sus. Thankfully though the path had been traversed before, and not by them. Likely the site of some sort of hidden and forbidden parties from the seniors, likely enough.

The party sort loved abandoned houses for just that reason.

He walked over to the kitchen and then located the board, giving it a very sureptitious pull-- it creaked and then it came loose, revealing the low light of the setting sun filtering into the kitchen. "It's gonna be a tight crawl, I'll go in first." he said as he handed Trick his backpack.

Criminally disarming. Trick was aware of the power in Nicky's smile, the power that his best friend did not seem aware that he possessed. Really, the way that the other man wielded that accidental charm was lethal, and Nicky was damn oblivious about it.

Trick followed after him, towards the suitably spooky house. He knew there were parties here, and that the creepiness of it was part of the draw too, but he'd never been here himself before. They were going in with fresh eyes.

He took the backpack from his friend as Nicky pulled back the board. "Got it. I'll watch your ass." Literally. He would literally stare at it while Nicky wiggled through. Trick was being honest anyway.

"I knew I could count on you."

To watch his ass, even as he got his foot in one of the wedged bricks and started to climb up just like he did the brick wall, he managed to crawl in through the window and found that he was right above the sink, his hands balanced on the edge while he started to wiggle his way through which unfortunately translated to a very creative rear wiggle.

"Okay, so when you are coming through, there are some broken dishes on the ground. Be very careful, but I'll be here to help you in." he said this in a very low whisper even though if there was a ghostly presence, likely it already knew that they were in the house.

"Got it, I'll watch out." He would be super careful. Very careful.

He scooted his way up and into the window, shimmying his way in as gingerly as possible. He was not going to land on his face in front of Nicky again. His ego couldn't survive it. So he was taking his time and making sure he had a good grasp on the landing before trying it. Except, just a she was about to pull himself the rest of the way through, the board that Nicky pulled back seemed to decide that noe was the time to snap back to its original position, thwapping Trick and, worst still, trapping him halfway in and halfway out, his ass hanging outside, his front half inside. Full Winnie-the-Pooh stuck.

"Shit..." he hissed out in a whisper. He wiggled to see if he could free himself. Nope. Very well stuck.

Nicky was watching this right as it happened except he was unable to do anything except watch in horror as his best friend became inexorably trapped. This was a comedy of errors and he came over to say something smart-ass because of course he had to. "So I think there was some garlic butter in a container for the fish but I don't think we have enough to cover your ass." he said with a snicker.

Though he did look around for a crate, finding a forgotten one next to the sink which he hooked with his foot and tugged it over. "Perhaps I can..." he was going to do something totally ill-advised likely, he was not built for movements like this even as he stepped onto the crate just as gingerly, testing it to hold his weight.

"Now, I'm gonna lean over you and try to unwedge you." he was going to try to keep his groin out of Trick's face-- but no promises. "..Pooh Bear..." okay, give him this Trick.. give him this.

"If you bring garlic anywhere near my ass, I swear I will steal every left sock you own for the rest of your life. You'll never have matching socks again. Ever," Patrick threatened with narrowed eyes and a dark red blush of embarrassment at his predicament lighting up his face. He was supposed to be the coordinated, athletic one between the two of them. What the hell was going on why was this his life tonight. This house was cursed, and it personally hated him.

He watched with uncertainty as Nicky found and climbed up on that crate. This was a set up for disaster, and that was before he realized that the new height brought him a very up close and personal view of his best friend's crotch. This was fine. This was a whole subset of kinks on the internet, but it was fine. "Do not fall, please." As if asking nicely would help avert the almost certain disaster.

"Shut up, asshole." Trick tried to sound put out, but the whole situation was absurd enough that he couldn't help a laugh.

"Hey, you're lucky that I'm not the Rabbit type.." he said with a sparkle to his eyes as he leaned over Trick, trying to steady himself with one hand on Trick's back and then the other hand trying to push aside the thick wooden plat.

"Which is, I think far nicer. At least I am not going to judge you for eating too much honey." another snicker as he then removed his hand from Trick's back but only so that he could brace it against the inside of the window, giving Trick enough space to wiggle. "Alright, see if you can shimmy your way in now?" he probably should have said 'carefully' but he was not thinking of that in this moment.

"Also? Can't guarantee the falling, you know gravity and I have never been friends."

"Aren't you though?" The Rabbit type. A little particular, a little opinionated. Nicky was, after all, certainly not like Piglet or Eyeore. Not nearly so pompous as Owl at least. Maybe there was a bit of Tigger in him, Trick thought to himself before realizing that typing his best friend into a Winnie the Pooh character wasn't helping much of anything at the moment. He snorted at the comment about the honey. "It is not my fault my ass is a full-size cake. It's a burden and responsibility that I must bear."

He tried to joke, tried to act like he wasn't going to fluster himself to death the way that Nicky was leaning over him. It was fine this was fine. Another sigh and he set about wiggling, a momentary struggle before he started to make forward progress, enough that he could get both halves of himself fully through the window, gingerly easing himself down so he didn't knock Nicky off the crate in the process.

"Thanks. And thanks for not taking a picture of my shame."

Disaster, thankfully, averted.

"Consider it a freebie, after all I have other pictures that could be used as blackmail though if it happens again? I am not making any promises." he said with a shrug as he started to hop down off the crate, however before he could do that, it keeled over and he was unfortunately not dexterous enough to talk and function at the same time.

It had been only a matter of time before his general klutziness came back to haunt him, and well something was going to kill him and likely it would not be any ghosts but his own klutzy hubris. A long stream of curses stretched out only after he hit the ground.

"I take that back, I will tell no one about you getting stuck in the window." because now Trick had blackmail fodder on him. "Oh gods, I think I broke my ass."

"Wow, betrayed." Patrick was currently trying to account for what pictures that Nicky actually had, because he was indeed sure that his best friend had quite a bit of blackmail fodder. He wasn't given much time to worry about it because gravity once more got its claws into Nicky and exacted its revenge.

He winced at the thud. Ouch. He fully sympathized with the sudden rather impressive string of curses.

The flash of a camera phone interrupted the low light as Trick snapped a quick picture of Nicky in his failure. ...what? There was a whole album on his phone entitled 'Nicky's love affair with the ground' okay? Then he offered him a hand up. "Your poor ass. So young and so beautiful, shattered before its time."

The thing was, going home was not an option. He was a Kirkland, a long family line of people who plunged into danger without nary a single thought in their head; ginger cats-- every one of them, even the females.

He saw that flash, but he was not going to say anything yet about it, rather he took up the hand offered and managed to get himself up from the ground. Thankfully he was young and not so very breakable (there had been moments and a few broken legs, and a few affectionately signed 'dumbass' signed into plaster, both from his sister and from Trick.

"It may be okay, I'll need an ice pack for it later." he dusted himself off of years of dirt layered on the ground and then he glanced around before he leaned down gingerly to pull out his EVP, all the while handing the flashlight over to Trick. Then he turned on the contraption and held it out, the green lights on it glowing a steady brightness.

"At the very least whatever entity that's in this place knows that we are here."

And Patrick had no self preservation instincts whatsoever. So they were an excellent combination. That said, Trick did have an extremely strong Nicky-preservation instinct at least.

He took the flashlight and held it so that Nicky could fiddle with the EVP. Once that was done he let the beam swing wide to take in the room. Another laugh, and he nodded. "Yeah, we lost the element of surprise all right. So... whatever is in here must be awake now."

They had not been subtle. Or quiet.

A moment and a breath and he let himself open to the strange vibrations that the supernatural always had, that rang through him like something in him called to it, little accidental catalyst and conduit that he was. "And there is definitely something here." His nose wrinkled. "It's hungry. That's not great."

Nicholas started to adjust buttons and dials, turning up frequencies and then making sure that the antenna was pointed in a direction that would not interfere with any rogue power lines in the distance. The good thing about abandoned houses was that you could tell the low distance electrical signals from what was outside down roads and streets. There was a sharp line that hugged the undercurrents; it usually hit Trick first before it came over the meter.

The hum was drawn out but it was there.

He stood on his tiptoes then and tried to see if the hum got louder the closer to the ceiling. There was a difference, but only subtle.

"Upstairs I think is the place to be."

Because putting stairs between you and your point of exit was a very good idea, especially where these two idiots were involved.

Going upstairs in their own personal horror movie. Yup. Excellent decisions all around. Patrick nodded. "Up we go. You take the lead. I'll bring up the rear. ...so I can catch your ass if gravity gets you again."

He was only half teasing. It was a serious consideration.

A shiver ran through him, as if their decision to come upstairs was one that the entity in this place was pleased with. Great. Cool. Well at least it wouldn't be a bust of an exploration, it seemed.

"Much appreciated, if anything I know that you got my ass." he said with a nudge and maybe a little bit of an ass-wiggle before he starts in through the kitchen door and into a hallway. There are picture frames that lay scattered everywhere, beer bottles and cans spread on the floor-- some broken and others crushed.

"Oh well, this does not surprise." He said as he steps gingerly over one of the more intact bottles and then comes face to face with a view of the hallways' end, and the stair that leads upward and then to the right at a flight landing. "Hey, at least there is a landing patch right in the middle, that means that there will be a chance for a full and complete stop before we land completely on at the foot of the stairs."

Thinking positively, that was Nicky for you.
